Levi’s Baby Blanket
About the pattern:
Levi’s Baby Blanket is based around the theme of three, which is personal to Levi’s family and also represents Father, Mother and new baby.
I chose three cable patterns for the blanket: a central heart motif repeated three times, a cable that suggested to me a baby cradled between parents, and a simple three-strand braid. Each cable motif is set off by a “gutter” of three stitches worked in reverse stockinette.
To stabilize and set off the cables, I chose seed stitch: a border of six stitches on each side of the cables and 10 rows on the top and bottom border.
You can read my notes and roundup, including more photos, here.
Materials:
Yarn: Superwash DK weight wool, about 800 yards.
I worked my blanket in Knit Picks Swish Superwash Bare (undyed) Worsted Weight and used about 3.5 of the 220 yard/100 gram hanks.
Needles: Size 5 circular needles (or whatever size you want to get gauge).
I used US size 5 KnitPicks Options needles. I wanted an extra-dense fabric so I worked on slightly smaller needles than I normally would have.
Gauge:
Rather than doing a big cable swatch, I suggest swatching up a square of seed aka moss stitch. I worked my blanket with 6 stitch side borders and 10 row top and bottom borders, because for me the width of 6 stitches was roughly equivalent to the height of 10 rows. Figuring this out ahead of time is helpful! Decide how much border you want (I suggest about an inch) and then swatch to determine how many rows and stitches you need. In my case, I got about 6 stitches and 10 rows to 1 inch.
My finished blanket was about 44×32, though your mileage may vary, depending on yarn and blocking.
Blanket pattern:
1. Cast on 160 stitches.
(If you want to alter the border, cast on for the width of your borders plus the 148 stitch width of the cable chart. In my case I worked borders six stitches wide, so I would add 12 (6 for each border, two borders total) to 148, the width of the cable chart, to get 160 stitches total.)
2. Work 10 rows in seed stitch for the bottom border. Seed stitch is made as follows: Row 1: K1, P1 (repeat), Row 2: P1, K1 (repeat)]
(I worked 10 rows, you should do whatever you’ve decided based on your swatch.)
3. Begin working chart 1 but keep your borders in seed stitch.
I suggest placing stitch markers at the beginning and end of the seed stitch border as well as in between each cable section and the three-stitch-wide reverse stockinette “gutter” between cables (marked in light blue) to help you remember where you are.
4. Work the cable chart, rows 1-80 three times.
5. On the fourth repeat, knit ONLY rows 1-56.
6. Work 10 rows in seed stitch for the top border.
(If you altered the bottom border work the same number of rows you knit on the bottom border.
7. Bind off. Be sure to block, as the cables will bloom dramatically with blocking!
A note about the cable chart:
I created this chart for myself and worked with it on an 11×17 sheet of paper. I think I would have gone crazy working from a smaller chart, but because I know 11×17 paper is not necessarily on everyone’s shelves, I’ve created an 8.5×11 size PDF as well.

Takes my breath away. Beautiful. Shirley
Hi Linda,
I love the Levi baby blanket pattern, but I’m wondering if you could please post or send me a picture of it UNfolded? I have a difficult time visualizing things unless I can see the whole item. The pattern looks fairly straightforward and I really like the color chart as well.
Thank you,
Kimberly Brandt
I love the pattern you have created! I am a fairly experienced knitter who for some strange reason likes to work from written directions rather than charts. Is there any way I could get this pattern in written form?
Maybe there is someone out there obsessed enough with knitting to translate it for me!
Brigit.
HI I am a very compolsive knitter I do break down the chart to a written form row by row ( I cut it to strips then punch a hole and put a ring through.each time I finishe one row I flip the page, Each time I got interupted I will know where to begin) If you are interested I will be happy to do one for you if you send me the pattern chart, though it will take a while since I am working on something right now. Alex
can you please send me a copy of your instructions.
thanking you in advance. me.
Hi, I’m an italian knitter, this blanket is beautiful. I will knit one for a friend of mine, what’s the measures of de finished blanket? thak you very much.
Mariangela
I am like Brigit, I need written directions and I really, really want to make this blanket! Can anyone translate it?Or tell me where I could find the heart and ‘family’ cable? (I have the three strand one already) If I had those I could figure out the rest.
Thanks, it’s much appreciated!
I think this is the most gorgeous baby blanket I have ever seen.
I will be a gandma at the end of Aug and will very much like to knit this blanket for my ist grandchild. I am not terribly savy with computer and don’t know how to pull out the instruction for this blanket.
Is there a way that if I send you a SASE and you can mail me the pattern? Much aloha, Alex
I am absolutely loving this pattern! Thank you so much for the charts that you made. I have never worked from a chart before, and I am doing great so far. I printed them out on big 11×17″ paper and I love the color coded cable stitches with the description of each across the top. I would love to eventually be able to design a pattern myself, and reading and understanding the chart while knitting this blanket is making me feel a lot more comfortable.
Hi Levis blanket is gorgeous but like another lady I am unable to download the pattern. I am shortly to be a grandma and would love to knit this blanket, please can you help? Many thanks Donna
Hi Everyone,
Thanks for the feedback — I’m so glad everyone likes the pattern!
Please PM me via Ravelry (which I’m on more frequently that my blog or e-mail these days) if you have any trouble with the downloads.
Also, there is more information on the blanket on the round-up page: http://knittikins.wordpress.com/2009/02/27/levis-baby-blanket/
I am sorry that I haven’t been able to get to writing out the whole pattern . . . maybe someday . . . but in the meantime, there is a tutorial on chart-reading that might be helpful here: http://countrywool.tripod.com/freepatterns/chart.htm
Happy knitting!
Lindsay
HI Lindsay I have just received your Levi graph .Thank you so much. I would like very much to send you a box of chocolate macademia nuts. But I don’t have your address.
Shalom, Alex
Hi!
I have down loaded the graph, but it is coming out quite small and I cannot seem to get it any larger.
I dont know if anyone can come up with a suggestion on how to make the chart bigger as my eyes are getting worse and im currently having to get my daughters to take turns reading out the stitches for me.
Many thanks

Hi Cat,
Fortunately, my husband works for a place that has a HUGE color printer (for architecture plans and such) if you know someone with access to that kind of printer, you’re good. If not, I’m sure Kinkos or any of the office places that do copies can make a LARGE color coded copy for you, cost is minimal. Happy Knitting!
