Levi’s Baby Blanket
About the pattern:
Levi’s Baby Blanket is based around the theme of three, which is personal to Levi’s family and also represents Father, Mother and new baby.
I chose three cable patterns for the blanket: a central heart motif repeated three times, a cable that suggested to me a baby cradled between parents, and a simple three-strand braid. Each cable motif is set off by a “gutter” of three stitches worked in reverse stockinette.
To stabilize and set off the cables, I chose seed stitch: a border of six stitches on each side of the cables and 10 rows on the top and bottom border.
You can read my notes and roundup, including more photos, here.
Materials:
Yarn: Superwash DK weight wool, about 800 yards.
I worked my blanket in Knit Picks Swish Superwash Bare (undyed) Worsted Weight and used about 3.5 of the 220 yard/100 gram hanks.
Needles: Size 5 circular needles (or whatever size you want to get gauge).
I used US size 5 KnitPicks Options needles. I wanted an extra-dense fabric so I worked on slightly smaller needles than I normally would have.
Gauge:
Rather than doing a big cable swatch, I suggest swatching up a square of seed aka moss stitch. I worked my blanket with 6 stitch side borders and 10 row top and bottom borders, because for me the width of 6 stitches was roughly equivalent to the height of 10 rows. Figuring this out ahead of time is helpful! Decide how much border you want (I suggest about an inch) and then swatch to determine how many rows and stitches you need. In my case, I got about 6 stitches and 10 rows to 1 inch.
My finished blanket was about 44×32, though your mileage may vary, depending on yarn and blocking.
Blanket pattern:
1. Cast on 160 stitches.
(If you want to alter the border, cast on for the width of your borders plus the 148 stitch width of the cable chart. In my case I worked borders six stitches wide, so I would add 12 (6 for each border, two borders total) to 148, the width of the cable chart, to get 160 stitches total.)
2. Work 10 rows in seed stitch for the bottom border. Seed stitch is made as follows: Row 1: K1, P1 (repeat), Row 2: P1, K1 (repeat)]
(I worked 10 rows, you should do whatever you’ve decided based on your swatch.)
3. Begin working chart 1 but keep your borders in seed stitch.
I suggest placing stitch markers at the beginning and end of the seed stitch border as well as in between each cable section and the three-stitch-wide reverse stockinette “gutter” between cables (marked in light blue) to help you remember where you are.
4. Work the cable chart, rows 1-80 three times.
5. On the fourth repeat, knit ONLY rows 1-56.
6. Work 10 rows in seed stitch for the top border.
(If you altered the bottom border work the same number of rows you knit on the bottom border.
7. Bind off. Be sure to block, as the cables will bloom dramatically with blocking!
A note about the cable chart:
I created this chart for myself and worked with it on an 11×17 sheet of paper. I think I would have gone crazy working from a smaller chart, but because I know 11×17 paper is not necessarily on everyone’s shelves, I’ve created an 8.5×11 size PDF as well.

Written Pattern Directions from Marny & Cynthia as of 8-2017
**UPDATE: August 2017**
There are now three sets of written directions for this pattern:
- Directions from Marny and Cynthia are here. These seem to be the “latest” synthesis of the other patterns, and are the most updated directions I have. Marny reports to me that these directions used and corrected the directions below from April and Mary.
- Directions from April W. are here.
- Directions from Mary W. are here. (I understand from the comments that there may be issues with these directions. I’d be happy to post a revision if someone sends one!)
While I’m happy to provide these links, I did not create the written directions, nor have I done a test-knit, so I’d always suggest the charts as the best option for knitting the blanket.
A huge thank-you to the awesome knitters who’ve been supporting each other via the comments. Levi is now in 2nd grade (I think? He’s OLD!) and my life has moved on, but I’m thrilled that the pattern is being shared and enjoyed. I’m cleaning up comments and deleting those with email addresses for security reasons — please re-comment if you need to!
Happy Knitting!

Hi Linda,
I love the Levi baby blanket pattern, but I’m wondering if you could please post or send me a picture of it UNfolded? I have a difficult time visualizing things unless I can see the whole item. The pattern looks fairly straightforward and I really like the color chart as well.
Thank you,
Kimberly Brandt
Hi, I’m an italian knitter, this blanket is beautiful. I will knit one for a friend of mine, what’s the measures of de finished blanket? thak you very much.
Mariangela
I am absolutely loving this pattern! Thank you so much for the charts that you made. I have never worked from a chart before, and I am doing great so far. I printed them out on big 11×17″ paper and I love the color coded cable stitches with the description of each across the top. I would love to eventually be able to design a pattern myself, and reading and understanding the chart while knitting this blanket is making me feel a lot more comfortable.
Hi Everyone,
Thanks for the feedback — I’m so glad everyone likes the blanket!
I am sorry that I haven’t been able to get to writing out the whole pattern . . . maybe someday . . . but in the meantime, there is a tutorial on chart-reading that might be helpful here: http://countrywool.tripod.com/freepatterns/chart.htm
Happy knitting!
Lindsay
Do you still have this excel file? I would like it if possible. Thanks.
Hi!
I have down loaded the graph, but it is coming out quite small and I cannot seem to get it any larger.
I dont know if anyone can come up with a suggestion on how to make the chart bigger as my eyes are getting worse and im currently having to get my daughters to take turns reading out the stitches for me.
Many thanks
Cat :o)
Hi Cat and everyone else, I just printed the cable chart on US Legal (8×11″). To print the chart as large as possible on my laser printer I selected “legal” paper, enlarged/scaled the setting to 80%. I tried 75% and realized that I could increase the scale to 80%. I hope this helps.
Hi Cat,
Fortunately, my husband works for a place that has a HUGE color printer (for architecture plans and such) if you know someone with access to that kind of printer, you’re good. If not, I’m sure Kinkos or any of the office places that do copies can make a LARGE color coded copy for you, cost is minimal. Happy Knitting!

Hi.
I’m on row 5 and having some difficulty.
It seems that I’m pearling my knits and vice versa on the odd rows.
is the first row the right side?
am i supposed to read left to right on each row?
something doesn’t seem quite right.
any help would be greatly appreciated.
beth
Since this blanket is worked flat (ie, back-and-forth) you work from right to left then work back the way you came, left to right. Does that make sense? You only work a chart right to left on every row when working in the round.
Hope that helps!
i want to make this blanket for my sister´s baby, but im a beginner n i dont know anything about cables! im willing to go for it! i hope it comes out ok, ill send a picture. i know ill be back for tutorial lol

Hi there,
I absolutely fell in love with this blanket and was hoping to make this for my best friend whom I’ve known since we were 3 years old. She’s expecting her first baby in January and I know this is exactly what she would want. The chart is a bit confusing for me (I’m a little new to knitting) and I don’t have the means to print on a larger sheet, so the print is miniscule. Have you had the time to do the written directions yet? I would love to have them! Thank you so much!!
Rachel
Well I did it my first download and I have the wool I have time off work YES and it’s MY TIME so I am going to do something I like this is lovely I will let you all know how I got on wish me luck
I really like the looks of this afghan. I wanted something different for my niece’s 3rd baby. I am not good at chart reading so have written the pattern out. Will let you know how it turns out. Thanks
Love, love, love this pattern!! Knitting right now for my precious new granddaughter who is due to make her arrival in February!! Thanks Again….
Hi. This is just THE MOST BEAUTIFUL BLANKET EVER and I would LOVE to make it!!!! However…..I do not know how to read charts:(….it’s just one of those things I got stuck on while learning to knit and figured I would only make garments with a written pattern. But I am SO drawn to this blanket!!! Is there any way you could email me the written pattern? I would be more than happy to favor you in some way (send you some stashed yarn perhaps???:)
Thanks so much!
PJ
Hi Alex,
I would love to have written insructions on this beautiful blanket.Never worked from a chart before.

I just tried this blanket, had to start a few times but so far its looking great…i simplified it slightly and only did the 4 cables and hart middle section. I am a beginner when it comes to knitting and the chart is easy to follow….thanks for posting it.
anything i didn’t understand i just looked up on utube.
this is the most beautiful baby blanket i have seen yet! i would love to make it for my son’s first baby.
I am going to do a version of this for my new baby! Thanks so much for taking the time to share your pattern… I can’t wait to get started!

I love your blanket! It’s beautiful!!!
Hi Every one who is interested in the written instruction I will try to post it up. I have a tip for you if you read the graph carefully you will notice the pattern is a several repeats , after go through first part of the patterns or even second repeat you will be able to memorize them all so pattern is longer needed. This can really speed up the project/
Thank u so much Alexandria,I’m so ready to start this adorable blanket, from my grandaughter(1)U did a fantastic job with the written instructions.Happy knitting.Nina
Actually the credit goes to the name that was written in the pattern. Incidentally, watch carefully there were some mistakes when it comes to P instead of K or vs versa as you can imagine when transpose from graft to written form it can be easily mix up.
I don’t knit but I’m obsessed with Levi’s blanket! Would you make one to order, please?! 😀
TY! Excellent – and I keep coming back to look at the pictures. I’ll let you know when I start this stunning blanket.
I have a horribly silly question. Would the rs be with the tail on the right or on the left?
Mimi, no question asked is the only one that is ‘horribly silly’ … ask away – it’s how we learn.
I try to remember that the side where the cables are nice is the RS. Going to check — brb . . . . well, the leftover tail is on the bottom left as I look at all the cables that I’m doing right now. My next row to be worked will be WS and the tail will be at the bottom right. HTH
hello, ive never worked from a chart before. i was wondering if the pattern was worked from bottom to top of the chart, or left to right. and does each square on the chart represent one stitch? and do you work the seed stitch around the entire blanket? i would greatly appreciate it if you could answer these questions for me 🙂
[…] to get the written-out charts completed, but several wonderful knitters have. For those who find the original charts I created a bit too daunting, here, at long last, are written […]
I created an excel file in order to knit this pattern. The original PDF file was too small (font) for me, and I cannot work from written instructions. I knit the pattern on size 6 needles with Bernat Baby Softee yarn, and found the pattern to be too “oblong” size, and was disappointed. If I knit again, I’d add a column of bobbles or another cable to widen the pattern. Other than that, it was fairly easy to knit and came out beautiful.
I do think the blanket is “skinnier” than I’d like (more a rectangle than a square). But, I did block it AGGRESSIVELY to get the cables to pop. A good blocking will do wonders!
I’m looking at the printed out pattern instructions and on Row 1 Panel B is:
CFB
Where is that on the meaning? It’s also on Row 17 … and other areas, too.
I’m glad to have revisited and re-read … or I would have forgotten to ADD on stitches for borders at both ends! Yikes!
Anyone add extra cables or other stitches?
I love this pattern and am very excited to give my blanket to a friend.
Beware, I used the written pattern and there are several mistakes in the panel B section and in the 2nd and 4th panel A the C6B was flipped.
Anytime in Panel B you see:
P4, P4, K4, P4
It should be:
P4, K4, P4, K4
In that section there are a total of 20 stitches, you show the correction for only 16 stitches. Should that line now read p4 k4 p4 k4 k4?
Panel B
Row 2: P4, P4, K4, P4, K4
?? Now you say it should be:
Row 2: P4, K4, P4, K4, K4
Why are there two K4, K4 at the end? Why wouldn’t it just be K8??
I know that CFB is actually C4B on the Excel. There is also a C4G which should be C4B … and Panel C Row 14 and other rows beginning with C2 should be: P2.
When in doubt, check the mirror image of each row.
Now that I realize how the Excel printout works, they really ARE written instructions. I might try to write them out per row instead of part of the row on all separate sheets. LOL
Yes, like that’s what I should be instead of spending time just knitting each section of Row 1 on each page, mark each as done, and then go back to Page 1, Row 2 and do the same.
I think the Excel instructions are brilliant!! Thank you!
Brigit
I am trying to figure out this pattern myself. I just want to make the hearts across and not the other designs. What Levi pattern is the HEARTS?? I am confused as to which pattern is for the hearts only. If you would answer that question for me I would be very appreciative of your help.
thank you
Lynn
Hello I absolutely love the pattern! I’m a novice at knitting and can’t even dream to acomplish such work. I’ m actually interested to commission a blanket of 40×50 for my comming baby! Do you do knitt for othwrs and charge a fee? Let me know or let me know of someone that can do it!
Thank you
Izabela
You’d be surprised at how easy this is, once you know how to knit, purl, make cable.
It’s worth practicing — little at a time. Phrase by phrase. Be prepared to frog (rip it, rip it) and enjoy all the processes.
YouTube is a huge help for finding how-to instructions.
Always ask – and learn how to do a Lifeline – which is simply pulling through a contrasting color yarn once you know that what you’ve done is correct.

I have just finished Levi’s blanket but did not use the chart. I sat one night for three hours and wrote it out. As I was knitting I discovered some mistakes on the chart but because I am an experienced Aran knitter I was able to spot the mistakes as I was knitting. I did the blanket in green wool because I want to send it to my son and his wife in Australia as they are expecting their first child and we are Irish.
I made this blanket for my nephew and I love your beautiful pattern! I used your chart (printed in black-and-white and color-coded with highlighters). I am totally self-taught from YouTube and other websites and had no problems following your chart. THANK YOU!!
jan, the pattern is at the top of this page! As is the way to the charts.
Dee S. had no problems and she’s a self-taught knitter!
I have the pattern in Excel and a print-out but haven’t even started this gorgeous blanket.
Hope you will give it a try and let us know how you’re faring . . .

I love this pattern and want to do a bigger version for a wedding gift. I just figured out your size of wool is not our standard. It’s more of a 10 ply where as we use 8 ply as standard. I don’t think it will differ too much and still be a beautiful gift.
I’ve never knitted something this big before without using circular needles. How long of straight needles should I use? The 3 panels on the excel file are just identifying the 3 different ares of blanket, correct? I don’t know those separately and then stitch them together, do I?
My suggestion is to use a circular needle – unless you have VERY long straight needles. Circulars are because they can accommodate a lot of stitches – but you knit as if using straight needles.
I’m pretty sure this blanket is done in full — not in stripes that requiring seaming together. Just one happy straight across blankie!!
The excel document is organized into several tabs. One is the complete blanket as shown Another tab is the blanket broken down into components parts/panels. I did that because I wanted to make a blanket larger than baby sized. I also liked the heart section and used that part to design a section on a sweater.

Marny,
Your help has been AMAZING! And I am so grateful! Thank you SO much! I am on Row 3! Long way to go! It’s for the sister of the mom of the baby I take care of! She’s (the sister) having her 1st baby! I’m knitting it in “butter yellow” cause she had a yellow baby blanket when she was little!!! Wish me luck everyone!
Cyndilou7, you’re welcome. We ARE having fun getting out the kinks so we can share with others.
Hi Gail G! I am knitting this blanket now! And because Marny (on here) helped me SO much, she and I together have corrected all the written instructions and will post them as soon as possible. I would post my pages with corrections written on them here but I don’t know how!
Yesterday I figured out how to fix the original chart! So, have been working on that. For now, Cynthia has finished her blanket … and it’s exciting to have been working with her on fixing the typos. The directions were right but we figured out that most of the errors were because there were a few typos (to be expected on such a pattern!!) and then each was copy/pasted as needed.
Give me a couple of weeks to be sure that I’ve done all that I can do . . .
I have been trying to keep a record of all the people here who are now asking for the corrected pattern. Please be patient.
It’s wonderful that so many of us love this designer’s creativity! She must be over the moon!
Thank you! So nice of you to keep us up to date and do all of this. Much appreciated!
Can someone confirm if the chart attached to this page is free of errors? I’ve read all the comments here since this was originally posted and it looks like most of the problems were with the written instructions and not the chart. While I would prefer the written, I can use the charts but don’t want to start if there are still problems.
Thank you!
I believe the chart is correct, but there were mistakes in the written directions.
I took the chart and did a copy/paste of each section – and found errors. So, if someone wants to print out the chart and knit from it, I’m sure you’ll see the problems.
Go for it.
Is there a crochet pattern that is equivalent? Love this blanket!
I am an advanced novice or intermediate knitter. Your charting is amazing and time consuming. They are pretty simple to read if you’ve done cables from charts before and I thank the cable KAL I participated in for this skill. I applaud you for all the work you put into this. I’m obsessive enough to put this into a written form one day and when I do I will let you know. Thank-you for this beautiful pattern.
Hello everyone. I recently began this beautiful pattern for my granddaughter due in January. Reading from Lindsay’s blog, and the concerns with the written patterns, I decided to knit this blanket from the charts. After two tries and seeing no pattern emerge (in fact it looked a tangled mess) in the larger middle (heart) section and two wider side sections, I turned to MaryW’s directions and tested the larger middle section, which she refers to as Panel C in her excel doc. Yes, there are some typos, and a few other corrections needed (mostly from the original script) but this time the pattern emerged beautifully on my test swatch. Here is the issue I noticed, and I’m wondering if anyone else noticed the same: on the original chart all the “F” and “B” symbols appear to be reversed, in other words all the “F”s should be “B”s and visa versa.
Cyndilou7 and Marny: I would love to get a copy of your written directions.
Thanks a bunch!
Hello Shantha and fellow knitters. The instruction chart I referred to is from the original directions by Lindsay, found at the end of her blanket directions. Now to embarrass myself… turns out the charts are formatted correctly, I’d just not knit from a chart before and read it incorrectly. Backwards is not pretty…
That was a time consuming error, but as I knit and re-knit I did get to understand the pattern better and could then scale down the instructions even further from some of the written ones posted. I now have the pattern neatly divided onto notecards for each section (and as others have noted there are some minor corrections to be made from the original chart).
As Mary W did, I created sections… A,B, etc. Except that I made the sections A,B,C and Center. Each section only needs to contain as many notecards as that section repeats itself. E.g. the Center repeats every 10 rows so just 10 cards (though I have mine on 5, with two row per card since all the even rows are just knitting the knits and purling the purls). Section B repeats every 16. A and C repeat every 8. I am using my Center card as my guide for when I’ve completed enough rows; knit center row 30x, plus rows 1-6 once).
I have the written instructions, tested and approved by myself and Marni, and I am
Happy to send to whomever sends me your email. There are 3 pages. left, center, right which makes up the entire pattern. Cinderellaq7@gmail.com
I have printed your chart. I understand what to do by the chart, however my question is, I with Di do this in two colors. Cables in one background in another. Can you help? I don’t need help on the braid cables. I get those. The other two I need help with. (If it helps I want the background in blue and cable in purple)
I think that’s above my talent level! I wouldn’t know how to do that unless I knitted it that way myself first. I know that when you use two colors, you have to cross them over each other in the back every place they join so you don’t have a hole, but I don’t know the specifics of how to tell you to do that within the pattern. Good luck!
I know how to cross the two colors to keep from holes. What I don’t know from your chart is … Which stitches (in the hear pattern and the other patter) are the actual cable stitches and those that are the background. The Braden cable I figured out already.
Boy spell ck was bad! From what I see all the white squares with a dot is background, and some of the white squares but not all of the white squares are background.
Like I said I know how to do the braid. The heart pattern and the other pattern with two colors is now working out yet. That is why I am asking

This. Is. Simply. Stunning. L♡VE It.
I’ve just finished a couple of blankets inspired by your design, particularly using the heart motif. The cable chart was fabulous to work from, great work for your first design effort! Thanks so much for sharing.
Oh so glad to hear!!! Thanks for sharing and you’re very welcome! It was a fun project with Marny!!
I am wondering how hard it would be to make this into a twin size blanket?
I only wan to knit cable hearts: those hearts with little cable in them. I think it would be easier for everyone to seperate all kinds of cables and make directions about each one individually. I almost broke my brains trying to understand this!
It is always possible to combain more than one, but it is hard to explain how to knit them all in the same time… And you can make your own unique combination of several patterns when you know them all seperately.
Don’t get me wrong – pattern is amazing! And i am thankfull for sharing this! 🙂 But i don’t understand this!
And which one is cable hearts with smaller cable inside the hearts in PDF file? The one in left side, right side or in the middle?
Thank you, i will appriciate your help!
Marny,I love the Levi’s blanket pattern. I would like the updated version. I plan to use the heart section and the plain cables as a wedding present, and them, when the time is appropriate, do the whole pattern for a baby. Thanks for your efforts.

First of all I think this is a beautiful blanket and I’m looking start working on it in the next day or so. I do have a question though. I opened the 11×17 chart and the written directions to do a comparison and I’ve found something that confuses me. On the 11×17 chart, row 79 (reading from left to right) starting at stitch 22 it says I should be doing C4BP then C4FP but in the written directions they’re reversed. It says it should be C4FP; C4BP. Which is it? I’ve noticed there are a lot of these reversals throughout the pattern so am I reading it wrong?
Thanks
You should be doing C4FP, then C4BP. It is the reverse of the same in Line 75. You have to reverse it to Cable it. I am knitting it right now and it is correct in the written instructions from myself and Marny!
I’m getting ready to start this beautiful blanket and hoping the link for the 8/2017 updated written instructions can be reposted to the actual pattern. Thank you for sharing your work!
Links should now be fixed! Happy knitting 🙂
wish someone would do this beautiful blanket on a knitting loom
You could do it! Give it a try! Nothing to lose.
Anyone who has emailed me for the corrected pattern and has not yet received my emails, please email me again! I do not visit the two websites on this pattern. Seems to be two …

I have made a few adjustments to turn this into a full size blanket bdcause the pattern is pretty easy to scale up. I’m currently test knitting it right now and will gladly submit those revisions if anyone wants them. The one I’m doing fits a queen size bed.
I would love a copy of your adjusted pattern when you have the time. My email is judie@dwesa.com.au. Thanks Judie
Thank you so much for this pattern. I adore this blanket. I’ve made one for each of my nephews and niece. My lovely sister-in-law has put the blankets away in tissue paper for the older children when they have children of their own.
I hope she has used archival tissue paper – it’s worth checking for what can or will not cause damage to fabric and/or yarns.
My very best wishes for a Healthy and Happy Chanukah and Merry Christmas and Blessed Kwanza to all and each of you and yours.
Hugs to Cynthia!
Hi Marny! Back at ‘cha! 💞
Cynthia
Love the hearts, and love the design. Reading thru all the lovely comments, I didn’t find anyone asking why there are photos of 2 blankets? I assume that the instructions are for the bottom blanket. Also, the titles ‘left’ ‘right’ and ‘centre’ instructions seem to be reversed, please let me know which is which – i.e. ‘narrow’, ‘widest’ and ‘Mama bear’. Rikki
The written directions by myself and Marny are correct as written. I have used them 3 times now. The blanket does come out narrow so I added a wider border on either side. Hope this helps! Good luck!
Please accept my apologies, I seem to have looked at the instruction wrong. I was referring to the width of the ‘hearts’. I am so terribly sorry for asking for clarification in a way which seems to be a criticisme. Please feel free to delete my original comment. And have a very HAPPY NEW YEAR!
Oh no, I didn’t feel you were criticizing! Sorry, I was in a rush. (Watching a sick puppy!) Anyhow, I was just trying to be quick and concise! Sorry about that! I don’t have any bad feelings about your question. I don’t understand the question about the size of the hearts though. I thought maybe the names of the sizes you gave were some place on the original pattern. And I don’t post the original pics so can’t answer that one either! Oops! Anyhow, hope what I did share helps! Happy knitting! 🙂
Thank you so much! Hope the puppy is much better now. Best regards!

Happy New Year to you also!
Thank you!!
