Frequent visitors to this space may recall that in the past six months I’ve been working on designing my first really original (ie, not from a pattern) project, with all the stops and starts that go along with such an endeavor. Just as Levi is a very welcome addition to his family, I’m happy to finally be able to show off Levi’s Baby Blanket. Ta da!
VITAL STATISTICS: Pattern: My own. I think the recipe for Levi’s blanket is fairly simple but I’ve never designed anything before. Please leave a comment with any questions or thoughts! **Please note: Written (as opposed to charted) directions are now available here and here.**
Made for: Baby Levi
Yarn: Knit Picks Swish Superwash Bare (undyed) Worsted Weight
Yardage: About 750 yards – I used 4 hanks and had a bit left over.
YarnSource: Knit Picks
Needles: US size 5 KnitPicks Options needles. I wanted an extra-dense fabric so I worked on slightly smaller needles than I normally would have.
Gauge/Final Size: About 44×32, depending on blocking.

It’s stunning! What a beautiful gift for a very lucky baby. 🙂
So pretty! What a lovely gift. Congrats on your first design effort!
Wow, that is really nice, I love the way the simple yarn really shows off the cables. That is a lot of nice work, this is a blanket that can be passed down though the years!
Vicki
So beautiful!
I can’t believe this is your first time designing something. Your blanket is truly an awesome on-of-a-kind. I really look forward to see more designs from you. PS, congrats on the new addition to you family.
I LOVE this blanket, it is just perfect for my neighbor and friend who is having a baby. I have been knitting my heart out (sorry for the pun) and following the recipe to the T, but there are no hearts. I am on line 60 of the chart and although the blanket is a beautiful celtic pattern there is not a single heart. can someone help me out
I had the same prole, but I loved it so so so much that I figured out a version of just the heart cable.

I hope this is OK Lindsay. Please let me know if it is not and I will remove my chart.
Tienchin
Did anyone else have this issue? I’m about to start this pattern, but if the hearts won’t show up then I want to make sure I substitute that section with Tienchin’s chart.
Of course it is ok to substitute anything you want! I will say that the heart pattern does take a little while to see clearly (maybe three repeats of the pattern?) and then to look like hearts, blocking really helps.
Holy moly this is GORGEOUS!!!. Great job!!
I wanted to respond so that you weren’t waiting on my response to get started- again. I ended up using the chart to knit the pattern and have found success. If you need any tips or have any questions i am more than happy to answer them. 8th times the charm is my new motto. And I think I fixed all of my mistakes.
Megan, I am looking at the pattern that came from word press that I printed out. It shows the entire pattern left to right. What mistakes did you find that I need to correct before I begin this beautiful blanket. Could you be specific please. Thanks for your help
I love it even more now that I can see the finished project! Amazing!!
I’m attempting to follow your pattern for a blanket for my own new baby! Could you tell me whether you used the odd rows or the even rows as the RS and WS? Or does it matter?
If you are still working on this piece, you need to start on the bottom right side of the pattern, which I believe is the right side. You always cable on the right side. Hope that helps! I’m on the 3rd repeat of the pattern and everyone loves it. ❤
How do you do “C4BP and C4FP”? I can’t find directions anywhere. THanks
Put 4 stitches on cable needle to front, or put 4 stitches on cable needle to back, the continue with next pattern instruction, picking up the forward or back cabled stitches when required back onto the regular needle.
The directions are at the bottom of the written directions I just posted. They are also on the charts.
This is just stunning. I have a great-grandchild arriving in the New Year and I can’t wait for the wool to arrive so that I can get started. I’m sure it will become a family treasure so thank you very much for your hard work.
Jen
This is my first time using a chart pattern to knit with so I looked up the directions on youtube @ http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ytbcX5R6G98
As for the pattern of C4BP and C4FP when you down load the pdf. from her other page at https://knittikins.wordpress.com/patterns/levis-baby-blanket/
the chart will describe what these acronyms mean. I tried to write these out in a written form and found it difficult to do however, if you assign each cable section a pattern number and use that pattern number when writing out the pattern it works a lot better. I am not very good at writing out patterns so I had to really work at it and it is something that I can understand but I am not sure it would be something someone else would understand, since I am a fairly a beginner at cable stitch patterns. I hope this makes since and helps you out. I am doing the blanket in yellow and it delightfully beautiful. Thank you for sharing your creative work with us we are blessed to have this pattern in our repertoire.
Thank you ❤
On the Excel that I printed out, below Row 80 is the explanation of C4FP and C4BP.
CFB is actually C4B
Beginning on Row 14 (and other rows with C2) – C2 should be P2.
At Row 9 etc. – C4G should be: C4B
Someone posted that P4, P4, K4, P4, K4 is wrong. Which rows or all of those?
Would someone please let us know for sure!
Thank you.
Have been following the written pattern – 40 rows in and P4,P4,K4,P4,K4 is DEFINITELY wrong!! :(((( Only have half of the cable. Now have to start again! Anyone have the same problem???
Don’t use the written pattern. The chart is much easier in my opinion to follow. There are also amendments to the written pattern. Read above I downloaded the chart onto my ipad and it is so much easier
How did you print out the chart(s) in order to make them LARGE enough to see??
My printout is so tiny … but I can see enough to see the typos in the Excel are NOT on the chart.
I hope you will be willing to explain how you printed out the charts. I don’t want to sit in front of my computer while knitting! 😉
I printed the chart and it came out in about 6 or 8 pages and I taped them together. I actually didn’t use this though. If you have a laptop or ipad that you could use, download it to that. I used my ipad and just made it bigger and followed it row by row. I will try find the printed corrections and send them to you as well
the rows that are p4 k4 p4 k4 p4 are row 2, 8, 10. 16, 18, 24, 26. 32. 34. 40. 42, 48, 50, 56. 58, 64, 66, 72. 74. 80
Perhaps the Excel pattern can be fixed by the Author. I found quite a few typos.
If there is a newer version, please let me know! Thank you!
I’m still questioning: P4, P4 – (why not P8?)
if you can get ahold of an ipad, download it to that and you can make it bigger and just work section by section. Or if you need to get some graft paper and copy the chart. I couldn’t do it from the written directions.
I printed out a lot — might as well stick with that from Excel.
When needed, I’ll check the charts.
I’m not sure graph paper will help me. It’s a lot of work to rewrite.
It’s amazing that we were given the instructions to begin with.
Thank you for your offer – msfair AT pacbell DOT net
Your creation is beautiful. Looks so soft
is there an actual written pattern for this. I’m not good at reading charts
Yes, Monica. Cynthia and I made a corrected written pattern. Email me directly if interested.
Anyone who asked for the pattern and has not yet received it, please email me again! msfair AT pacbell DOT net.
could i have a copy please
Hi! I was wondering about the wrong-side rows…usually in cables you work what you see and don’t need a write-out of the wrong-side. Is this the case for this pattern?
this is truly amazing! This is one of the nicest knitted blankets I have ever seen. ❤️❤️❤️
I am interested to know if I could do this. I am more of an advanced novice. I am self taught and don’t know anyone who knits. I taught my some, but he is happy just knitting his own blankets in the knit stitch and on regular knitting needles. I can now read a pattern and I knit and pearl. But I would love to try to make this beautiful blanket for my first baby blanket. Do you think I could do it?
If you know how to do the knit stitch, the purl stitch, the yarn over – that pretty much covers all you will need to do this lovely Levi’s baby blanket.
Make sure to use the corrected version of the pattern. That’s what has become confusing in this website.
Cynthia and Marny (that’s me) made the corrections to the mixup of the designer’s original pattern.
Remember: the frog stitch! Learning that is a great learning tool. Frog stitch: rippit rippit rip it.
Go slowly – and you’ll make Levi’s baby blanket and enjoy each stitch to the finish.
